Picking subjects that inspire me to create depends on how and what I want to express at the time. As I work on different pieces, I get inspired to use my subjects in more pieces of art.
Picking subjects with personality
I love to draw and paint animals because of their personalities there is no limits to my list of subjects. Each breed has their own behaviors. Dogs and cats where breed for a purpose so, you can have a something to work or some are just companions that provide lots of love.
Wild animals aren’t that much different other than accessibility. Picking subjects is easy because they are everywhere, like my dogs, birds, fish and I can take a trip to a zoo.
Ideally I would love to travel to Africa or India to experience them in their own habitat, so I take advantage of every opportunity to see as many animals as I can. Your time is limited so take photographs.
Photographs help with picking subjects
Photographs are the key to capture their personality because, I see different trats in each of them. When I do a commissioned piece of work it is not so much how I see their animals, it is what the client wants you to see.
One of the best parts is I get to spend time with these great animals and their owners. I listen to my clients, take a lot of photos and we come up with what they want. I now have a piece that satisfies my client and permission to use their pet as a subject. I can us the other photos in other work. This is great because I collect one more to pick from in my inspiration catalogue.
Animals with a magnetic personality will draw you to them almost to say draw me.
Pick the setting for you subjects
