Tortured artist are known throughout history as much for their suffering as for their art. Most of us have seen these master pieces whether you like the or not they are the foundation of art.
Every era of time has been captured by artist. They have captured history and presented it from their point of view. Some artist from the past are known for their love lives, suffering or personal triumphs as well as their skills.
Everyone has a story but some are just juicy than others I guess. So when you can tie someone’s juice story with their proof of talent it draws the prices for that artist work. Unfortunately it usually happens after they die.
Do tortured artist make better art?
No, I don’t believe that they do. The one thing that they have we all have as artist and humans. The ability to express ourselves in a manner that touches others. That comes from deep inside our soul, people who go to work every day and come home and still have enough for their loved ones express their love in the way they know, hard work. Others may have skills beyond my capability and yet we both bring something to share. Any artist who shows off their expertise in well executed pieces of work has my respect. These artist in my opinion art true masters. Their work is impeccable and appreciated. Yet there are the artist who are compelled to express their feelings in their work away from the normal or excepted process.
Artist like Salvador Dali who was highly imaginative, and also enjoyed indulging in unusual and grandiose behavior. To the dismay of those who held his work in high regard, and to the irritation of his critics, his eccentric manner and attention-grabbing public actions sometimes drew more attention than his artwork. One of my favorites Vincent van Gogh who maybe the most famous tortured artist. He suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions and though he worried about his mental stability, he often neglected his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. His friendship with Gauguin ended after a confrontation with a razor, when in a rage, he severed part of his own left ear.
I think that the artist that can channel emotion through their work is a step above the rest. People want to have a connection to you and to your work so show off your skills and share your story.
